Many Civil Lawyers spend the first half of their academic year trying to figure out what is expected of them, how to navigate the LL.M/JD program and how to cover their assignments efficiently.*

With LL.M/JD tuition fees of up to USD $45,000 per year and a limited time in the U.S. (of about 9 to 12 months for LL.M students), this knowledge-gap can be very expensive as well extraordinarily time consuming.

*Based on proprietary research  conducted with LL.M/JD alumni from various top U.S. law schools.

Some of the challenges that await are expected:

¨ Language barrier (or not the same level of comfort as with native tongue).

¨ New school, new classmates, new subjects.

¨ Moving to a new city, far away from home.

¨ Culture shock.

Others, however, may be unexpected (or underestimated):

¨ Differences in legal systems that highly impact the way issues are “spotted” and analyzed.

¨ Communication differences that impact the way persuasive arguments are expressed.

¨ Different expectations by faculty that impact the way exams are graded and how performance is evaluated.

¨ Large amounts of material to cover in preparation for class discussions, which are conducted in Socratic style (i.e. students do not walk away from class with a clear view of the law).

¨ Competition with more advanced students, who have had at least 1 more year (sometimes 2) of U.S. legal studies than international LL.M/JD students.

¨ The above, coupled with a grading system that can foster fierce competition.
